How Flatbed Towing Works
A flatbed rollback features a hydraulic bed that slides backward and tilts to the ground. The disabled vehicle is winched onto the platform and secured with eight-point nylon straps. All four wheels remain completely elevated off the road surface throughout transport, eliminating rolling friction and driveline rotation.
When Flatbed Towing is Strictly Required
Flatbed towing is non-negotiable for all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles (Subaru, Audi Quattro, BMW xDrive), electric vehicles (Tesla, Rivian, Mustang Mach-E), lowered sports cars, and luxury cars with air suspension. Dragging the drive wheels of an AWD or EV on the road can instantly destroy electric motors and center differentials.
When Wheel-Lift Wreckers Are the Better Solution
Wheel-lift wreckers use hydraulic metal arms that cradle two tires, lifting one axle while the non-drive axle rolls on the pavement. Wheel-lift trucks are far more agile and compact than 30-foot flatbeds, making them ideal for subterranean parking garages, tight alleyways, and short two-wheel-drive moves.
